San Diego Art Institute presents Feel the Noise, a collaborative exhibition between artists Francisco Eme, Margaret Noble, Aren Skalman, and members of the Blind Community Center of San Diego, opening July 15, 2017. On view Tuesday, July 18 - Friday, July 21, 2:00 - 6:00pm by appointment.
Feel the Noise is an exhibition comprised of collaborative projects exploring the ways those with visual impairments navigate the world around them. The opening reception will take place at the San Diego Art Institute Project Space at Horton Plaza, on Saturday, July 15th from 6pm-8pm. The pop-up exhibition will run though July 22nd.
Through hands-on workshops taking place over the course of several months, San Diego and Tijuana based artists Francisco Eme, Aren Skalman, and Margaret Noble developed socially engaged projects designed specifically for the members of the Blind Community Center of San Diego. Relationships between the artists and BCCSD members were cultivated through time spent together while learning new skills and creating art, therein establishing the collaborative content for the exhibition.
Projects documenting sounds from specific spaces and environments depict favorite memories and experiences of those shared by BCCSD members. Instruments hand-crafted from found objects amplify sound and rhythm throughout the exhibition space. A simulation of touch and sound-driven navigation through an unfamiliar environment is shared as a tool for exploring the concept of dissociative roaming.
The opening reception for Feel the Noise is free of charge and welcomes all ages. Light refreshments will be provided.
