MAKE OR BREAK POTTERY
OPENING DAY EVENTS
• Participate in a one-of-a-kind pottery making workshop led by renowned Mexican artist Daria Mariscal. Daria will show you how to make pottery according to a more than 1000 year old Paipai tradition. We’ll be using clay Daria hand mines herself from her hometown of Santa Catarina, nestled in the Sierra de Juárez mountain range in Baja California. The clay is full of shimmering gold mica and when pit fired, the sides of your pots will burst with blue, black and silver markings. Please RSVP as we have limited amounts of clay.
*SOLD OUT*
• Enjoy free refreshments all day, including a very special blend of illy® coffee brewed with cinnamon served in cups made by tragically hip Canadian ceramicist, Maggie Boyd. Maggie’s down from Vancouver and has been busy making cups from clay deposits found right here in Balboa Park. After you enjoy your last sip, her only request is that you smash your cup on the floor so she can sweep up the pieces and put them back where she found them.
• A chance to win your very own illy® espresso machine or set of 4 espresso cups designed by American artist, Peter Shire. Peter is one of California’s most celebrated visual artists, creating some of the West Coast’s most iconic imagery: from the postmodern designs he churned out as a part of the infamous 1980’s Memphis Design group to the wildly inventive artwork he continues to make out of his Echo Park Pottery studio in Los Angeles.
+ Tuesday September 19th after hours at 6pm when Daria helps the San Diego Art Institute celebrate California Native American Day with a traditional pit fire overlooking Cabrillo Bridge to fire pottery created at our workshop
