SDAI is proud to host its first full day summer art camp. Each unique week of projects will correspond with a popular contemporary art theme. Campers will have the chance to experiment with a wide range of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and video.

Week 1: July 10-14
"Loud & Proud: Colors, Patterns, and Shapes"
Campers will experiment with the brightest and boldest colors and shapes to create new patterns for paintings, drawings, and textiles fashioned after the Pattern & Decoration movement of the 1980's.
Week 2: July 17-21
"Move It Or Lose It: Time & Motion Based Art"
We're going to make things with movement. How do we describe action through static images? How can we turn our bodies into sculptures? Campers will explore time and motion through a series of prompts and exercises that include drawing, performance, video, and painting.
Week 3: July 24-28
"Camp Parkeology"
Camp Parkeology offers young people a chance to explore museums, gardens, archives, and hidden spots in Balboa Park. Guided by Parkeology educators, campgoers ages 9-12 explore parts of museums that are often not accessed by the public. Each field trip becomes inspiration for a new multi-media art project. Over the course of a week, we will visit gardens, carousels, exhibits, and archives in the Mingei, Nat, Museum of Man, the San Diego History Center, and the grounds of Balboa Park.
Week 4: July 31-August 4
"Alter Egos, Villains, and Heroes: Playing the Part"
Contemporary artists have been creating alternative personas to explore different aspects of personality, interpretations of relationships and emotions, and disguising the self to perform as someone entirely different. Campers will create alter egos, design costumes, and create narratives of their fully developed personas.
Week 5: August 7-11
"Playtime: Toys, Dolls, and Stuffed Animals"
Artists like Mike Kelley and Laurie Simmons have used toys and stuffed animals to create artwork that describes childhood, adolescence, and nostalgia. Campers will create their own toys, dolls, and stuffed animals using found materials, fabric, and more.
